Well I can tell you for sure upgrading will cost you much more cause I did the same thing. I went from 55gal to 125gal. I was stoke on getting a bigger tank that I went out and bought most of the highend pumps and what not. When I bought my tank I paid for the lids, lights, tank, stand $625 and then I went with a Eheim pro3, now I wasn't to sure on the pump cause on my 55gal all I ran was biowheels and maintain was simple so I was kinda affraid on what type of pump and what company would be better and what it would take to clean and so forth. All in all I have been running this setup with the pro3 for year and half I clean the pump about every six months and I can't complain. I did also up grade to a powerhead just these year to help water movement. My 125gal has CA/SA and I do around 50% water changes once a week . I love my tank so much I bought a used 125gal for $300 and now I just got my bigger tank 2months ago which is 180gal. This hobby is a DRUG and I love this Hobby I hope the information helps please PM if any question thanks!

OR

You get VERY lucky and find urself a free tank.. Thats how i got my 150gallon. from another MFK on this forum.. tank was cracked.. but i fixed it and now.. its a dream come true...

I only had to pay for the gas to drive to San Diego to get it.. but totally worth it...

Once in awhile.. a nice tank will pop up for free...

I recommend for filters.. 2 ac110 or try canister filters.. that always works best..... FX5 is the cheapest for high end filters.. can clean up to 4 gallon....

thanks for the info guys, im reletively new in fishkeeping and have no experiance with larger tanks, so the information really helps
