I am planning to eventually upgrade my fish tank from a 75 to a 180. The problem is, the 180 has to go in the spot the 75 is now. What is the best way to do this with the least amount of stress on the fish.

Well they are going to have to come out. Good thing is that you dont have to travel with them. Depending on the size of your fish ,get a bucket or rubbermaid container that will hold them, drop an airstone in there and make sure you have a a heater in there as the temperature buffer will be small due to the small volume of water. If you can fit a HOB that would be great too. Add some plastic plants to float on top to make them feel more secure and to keep them from jumping. COVER the tank with something, fish like to jump if startled or scared. Dont feed them the night before or that day to keep your water from being fouled.
Switch out your tanks.
I had to move 3 tanks and a household last year in the middle of chicago winter, and the fish stayed in containers for 6 hours, untill the move was complete. Not a single loss.

rubbermaid containers have always worked for me

use the water from the 75 to go back in and the gravel and filter to and you would not need to wory adout cycling.

Ill second that.We just moved 7 tanks,5 in one day and secret is to have as many safe grade containers to take 60 to 70% of the water.Plan ahead then just get stuck in,get help to move empty tank and refill asap.We only lost one fish that was terminally ill so it saved us doing the decent thing for him.

Also remember to take care of your bio media... dump them into a pail or something with tank water and place an airstone beneath it so that the BB wont die off.
