I have a 14 gallon tank, and am upgrading to a 29 gallon in a few days. Right now I have a dwarf neon gourami, a gold gourami, a bala shark, a violet goby, and some ghost shrimp (intended for consumption).

The gouramis are both about 2", the bala is about 3", and the goby is about 4". They're all swimming around happily in the tall 14. I know that the bala and the goby (if she lives for long in the freshwater, I was misinformed when I bought here. Might set up a brackish tank w/crab in a few months though) are going to get quite big, and will force me to get a 55 gallon or so eventually. But for the next year or so, what other fish can I add to the tank? I know the rule is "1 gallon of water for every inch of fish" but I don't really know how accurate that is (since you're not going to stick a 10" anything in a 10 gallon tank.) I want a jellybean parrotfish. All of my fish are calm and don't fight (goby's have a bad rep b/c they aren't the prettiest fish). What else might I be able to put in there? I was also looking into african dwarf frogs, but I'm not sure how'd they do with the goby, even though she's too small to eat them for now.

the 1" per gallon rule only works for smaller fish. when your talking big fish such as oscars, a 10" oscar produces much more waste than 10-1" fish and there-for needs a larger tank. its good that your upgrading the size of your tank for your bala shark but i would aim for 75 gallons or more rather than 55. as for fish for your 29 gallon here are some sugestions: for catfish, try either Spotted or Stripped Rafael Catfish. Maybe you would like a school of around 7 Tiger Barbs to add some movment to your tank, or many 4-5 giant danios(they would look good with the Bala). I suggest you go to your LFS and look around, any semi-aggresive fish that stays under 6" would probaly make a good addition to your tank, just make sure you research the fish before you buy it!!!! good luck!!! and keep us updated.

Yeah, the goby was a bit of an impulse buy. I used my cell to google them, but the site that came up said that they'd live just fine in freshwater. When I got home and looked further into it, I got conflicting info, but since they're from brackish water, it makes sense that brackish is what they'd do best in.
Would the goby eat african dwarf frogs eventually? At this point she isn't big enough.

African dwarf frogs are not the best swimmers...so if the 29 gallo tank you are getting is tall, I would not recommend the frogs, and same with the 14g.
