Hi all, I have a 5x2x2 with a baby Giant Gourami, an Ompok bimaculatus and a Senegal Bichir. i'm using two filters at the moment, an 1500lph canister and a 2500lph internal. I have been considering upgrading to a Fluval FX5, as from what I hear, they are excellent filters. is this a worthwile upgrade, or should I just stay wih the filters I already have?

There is no need for you to upgrade. You could always pull a 'WyldFya' and add the FX5 for the hell of it, but unless nitrates are already high then you need to be doing larger volume and or more often water changes.

If you don't reckon its necessary, then I'll save the $500.

I just got one of those filter on ebay for $190 shipped. I'm using it on a 180g with overflow. I know that people don't typically use canisters with overflows, but so far all tests have gone good. I've just had to be creative with the plumbing.

I love the FX5 but you don't really need it. Too many people overlook the fact that you can only ever have the ammount of BB (benificial bacteria) that your fish load can support. Having 50 times the tank volume in your filter system might sound impressive but for all practicle purpases it's useless....

Having another filter does not solve bad water quality to an extent, its the water changes you do that effect the water.
