I am in the process of researching the design and operation of a large river tank that will be intended to represent the Mississippi River.

The tank would house local river species such as catfish, gar, bass, crappie, bluegill, ect...

Any info I can learn about keeping these species alive and healthy would be greatly appreciated or if anyone has a link for me to check out to learn more about the necessary water quality, pH, temperature, ect please post it for me.

I am aloso very curious about the proper steps for water changes on a system of this sizes as well as whether to use tap water VS filtered water and such.

As I said any info and help is GREATLY appreciated.

I recommend looking around in the NANFA forums for some info. You may find what you are looking for there.
Keep us posted on this. That will be an awsome tank. Should also make for some fun collecting trips if you plan on catching some yourself.

for a 3000g tank ur gonna want to leave out the gar.

Why do you think so?

Something of that size, you'll want to look into a constant drip/feed system. Basically you'll have new, fresh water constantly flowing at a slow rate into the system, with an overflow that sends the excess water to the drain. You'll need to have some way of filtering chlorine and/or chloramine from the water.

Sounds like an ambitious project, and one I'd like to see pics of if you get it started.

i know u keep ur gar with cats but generally its a no no. looking at the stocklist(not counting the etc part) i wouldnt trust my gar with some or trust a few with the gar. it could be done but personally if i was gonna do that list i would step up to 5000 for a better safty factor.

Agreed ;)

I would agree about the gar, probably make a meal out of some of the fish you listed, as well as probably starving with the bass and cats. I would stick with bass, catfish, larger sunfish, and maybe a carp. Sturgeon would be very cool too, as would a yellow perch and bowfin.
If I were you, I would consider a few things. One is do you want a few large fish, or lots of medium ones. What is the dimensions of the tank? Can your floor support it? Are you building it, or is someone else? Do you want predators, omnivores? Are you adverse to feeding live fish, and do you have a source for them?
