So, here's the skinny. We've got a female juvenile Motoro ray (6" disc) that is sticking to the lid of the tank. The tank is dramatically over-filtered, well-cycled and the water params are perfect, even when watched closely after heavy feeding (5ppm Nitrate, Ammonia and Nitrite are at steady 0ppm).

The 125 gallon tank has 2 bubble discs for aeration (the water is inundated with small air bubbles constantly), a Fluval FX5 stuffed with pot scrubbies and ceramic media, A Fluval F204 that powers a 5-gallon bucket filled with 2 gallons of bio-balls, 1 gallon of ceramic biomax, and 2 gallons of pot scrubbies. There is also a rotating powerhead and a fluidized bed filter running sand media rated for a 900-gallon tank.

There are no bothersome tankmates, and I have a fully-automated 1gph drip system set up on it that has been running for quite some time.

Mox (the upside-down motoro) is eating well, and she is showing no other signs of stress.

Has anyone seen this behavior exhibited by their rays before?

Sure... I have a Yepezy ray eating and seeking food this way about half of his time.... It is sometimes so funny when he spits out like a fountain.

i think it likes the warmth of the lights

that is funny, a few weeks ago i would have said something is wrong.....

But i was just over at a friends house the other day that bought one of my CB pups and his ray was doing the same exact thing... His would also get on the buble disc and float to the top and "surf" His back would hang out of the water... I told him someting is wrong- and tested his water everything was perfect, some rays are just crazy like that. i guess, I think the current and the bubbles have something to do with it.

My orbignyi and my yepezi's do this everyday. They are just searching for food in the tank and playing. Just think of it like this........They are extremely happy to be in a nice home!!!!!!!!

Are there any bigger rays in the tank?

Love how the light transfers through its spiracles....

i know michael h's marble does this all the time as well, but his actually swims upside down
