Yesterday for the first time (that I know of) one of my rays swam upsidedown at the surface, slapping the water and making a lot of noise. Now that she got the hang of this, she does it all the time. My water parameters are fine. I did adjust the temp from 82 to 85 because I wanted the new Dats to feel more comfortable but I did this over the course of two days. Is she just having fun or is this a sign of trouble?

I've seen other peoples rays do this too.. I think Lode's do it quiet a bit.

I think that the increase in temperature may have bumped up the metabolism of the ray, making it search out food more vigorously.. once it learned it could slap the surface and look for food there, it added a whole new dimension to the environment. Did you try to make the ray stop be feeding it? You may have taught an old dog a new trick ;)

I also hypothesis it could be from stress type issues, but you say water quality is fine.. It could be an attempted method of escape because she is not happy with her environment, like the temp is too high, lack of space, pesky tankmates.. If the ray is newer or juvenile, and is having hunger issues, this is when I would be concerned.. but if it seems playful and they instantly react to food, it should be no worries.

It is still a juvie but eats like a horse. I think you're probably right that the temp thing might have triggered this but I'll keep an eye out for the other issues you mentioned. Thanks Miles.

Then it's :rip

I want to teach my rays to do that!!

Isnt there a video of that somewhere here?
