i have a 55 gallon tank with a 5" Severum he is quite mean for a severum as they are labeled as super peaceful cichlids, mine is not from time to time it would nip the oscar's scales and fins until he killed him leaving him almost scaleless, but that oscar was blind they sold me a blind one i didnt even notice :( and also attacks my needlefish when it feels like it... and it defends it self well from smaller 3" or so, aggressive cichlids such as my last firemouth and green terror, and jack dempsey(all are in different tanks now) they never lip locked but he would always chase them if they nipped his tail, and it almost killed my 6" convict cichlid as he lost the fight... i know jewels are aggressive but i am 100% my severum can hold it self against a wimpy 4-6" jewel as the severum at the end grows to at least 8" and becomes territorial once there but not so aggressive though :) like it wont chase other fish relentlessly,

my concern is ive read jewels grow to a maximum of 5-6" and thats great but they are african? i seen people keeping them wit SA/CA cichlids wit no problems and in all sites says they are very hardy fish meaning they adjust to almost any type of water, my pH is from 6.3-7.0 but should it be an issue for this fish? the temp and all that is good, also does it need like good hiding places? and what do u think will win.. and how mean are they? wat would win a 8" mean male jack dempsey or a 5" jewel

What all is actually in the tank now?

Jewels adjust to just about anything IME as most LFS's have them in the exact water you will be putting them in anyway, I would have more concern about the interactions with the other fish in a 55 gallon depending on what's in there.

Goodluck mine are means as hell. I have Hemichromis Guttatus. Most Jewel Cichlids don't require a high PH like the rift lake cichilds their care is more akin to Kribs. But they can be ten times meaner.

the fishes right now in there are a 4.5" Severum 5" Senegal Bichir and a 8" Dwarf Needlefish the reason why i am not buying the jewel cichlid anymore is because one i have seen a video where this guy fights and almost wins against a bigger texas cichlid, jewels just wont give up! and the second reason is if that bigger texas had trouble, i dont think even my 3.5" New oscar i got will hold it self against a 2" Jewel my oscar fights but gives up so easily... well i guess thats how all oscars are though the red ones are the most peaceful ones and the albinos tend to be the more meaner ones, but usually oscars dont do well in an aggressive cichlid tank, unless the oscar is way bigger than them, they dont know how to fight really well, what do you think of electric yellow cichlid, those are much more peaceful, however though im planning to upgrade to a bigger tank in a year or so, and my fishes tend to grow really slow compared to what the internet says ALWAYS

Put a red devil in your tank it will fix your problem. lol

Genocide is not the answer.

I think it's probably best you didn't do a Jewel. I've only kept Africans with Africans, and yellow labs for that matter with yellow labs so I frankly don't know how everything will do together, and don't really recommend it. Remember the labs might be the tamest of the Malawi's, but they are still a Malawai, they are a mean bunch. Especially for their size...

I've got a jewel in with my green terror and green severum. They all have their own territoy and all defend it necessary. So far it is working out for me quite well. The jewel and green severum sometimes get into it though.

yea im not getting a jewel nor a yellow lab but idk a yellow lab is peaceful and even an african is known to lose against some south american cichlids such as firemouths and convicts and fake gts not the real ones... is either the yellow or a jack dempsey but dats it

I recently lost my jewel of several years, and it was a great fish, got along with everyone... I had it in several different tanks throughout its life... only ever had some meanness with tetras. Stood up to the african cichlids and never got challenged again, and was always best friends with the fish in my avatar (a bastard to everyone else). It never got very big but it was by far the brightest/pinkest jewel I've ever seen (most have pale spots or a yellowish/dull bit, but it was bright red/pink from end to end) and I'd love to find another, but I know I just got lucky and a replacement would probably be a bastard.

I can't think of any reason why it'd be a giant menace, but it'd definitely be no slouch. 55g isn't a whole lot of room, so I might not risk it unless I also had another tank.

I have like the fastest 4" ruby red jewel cichlid on earth. Try as I may, I have been unable to catch him to rehome him. He is currently living with a 11" Red Bay Snook, a 6" Convict cichlid, a 10" albino channel catfish, and two 9" alligator gars.

I tried removing him when I got the two baby alligator gars (~ 3"). They have tried to eat him dozens of times. He is one hell of a scrapper being ably to defend himself from a couple gars and snook well over twice his size.

I have tried a number of times to rehome him, but he still continues to avoid being removed from the tank, so he must not be all that uncomfortable with these brusiers.
