my friend has asked me to rehome her fish and is bringing them over tonight. i have just tested my tanks, and need urgent help to reduce ammonia. my 8 litre tank is fine, thats going to be a quarantine tank for her sick bronze cory and his mate. testing at ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate 40ppm. got no heater for this one, but can put a light in there. current temp is 22 degrees celsius, light usually increases is to 25 degrees celsius

my 2 foot tank is going to rehome 3 zebra danio. its 65 litres and contains 4 apple snails and 5 1 inch cherry barbs. testing at ammonia 0.50ppm, nitrite 0.25ppm and nitrate 40ppm. there is some food waste which i need to fish out, broccoli and peas from yesterday which will be coming out shortly. i know i will need a partial water change, but how much? i have aquasafe and nutrafin cycle to use in there, fish are coming in 7 hours. will that sort it? tank is running fluval 2+ filter. temp is 25 degrees

my 3 foot, 96 litre tank is to rehome 1 albino plec who is 3 inches, until i can either get a bigger tank, or find another home for him, testing at ammonia 0.25ppm, nitrite 2.0ppm and nitrate 40ppm. currently houses 2 1.5 inch red honey gourami , 2 2 inch bronze cory, 2 2 inch pepper cory, 1 2.5 inch dalmation molly, 1 2 inch dalmation molly, 2 1 inch dalmation molly, 1 2.5 inch bristlenose plec and 5 1.5 inch silvertip tetra. oh, and 8 apple snails. what amount of water change do i need? tank is running fluval 3+ filter. temp is 26 degrees. tank is fully cycled for 4 months so suspect mini-cycle.

start with a 50% change, your tank isn't cycled yet so it may take a bit before the ammonia goes away. Nice catch though, it's better to be aware of an uncycled tank so that you can take the necessary measures than to just stick fish in a tank. How long has the tank been set up? The fact that you have 40 ppm's of nitrate in the majority of your tanks but ammonia as well is a little strange. Have you added any new additions recently?

the 3 foot tank is cycled, it has been running with fish in for 4 months and this is the first time i have had ammonia apart from when i did my fishless cycle at the start. 2 foot tank has been up and running for 4 weeks, but only had fish for a week. added the cherry barbs last week, bigger tank had the silvertip tetra put in 3 days ago

thats strange, I'd do a 50% water change to start with and monitor the water throughout the day. If ammonia or nitrite start to go up again do a 10% water change until it's back down again, and hopefully the mini cycle will be finished soon

hoping so. problem is, i have to put the new fish in tonight, but i dont want to kill them. 3 zebra danio going into 2 foot tank, that one isnt too bad, but the ammonia on the 3 ft is really worrying me, will be putting aquasafe and nutrafin cycle in there on a 50% change

right, have done the water change, and added aquasafe and nutrafin cycle. how long do i need to leave it before i test again?
