I know my butts gonna look like hamburger meat after posting this, but it's my FRIEND'S situation! I just wanna help for the fish and my buddy! He had his cichla housed in a 55 gal (yes 55 gallon, I KNOW, and told him) scince he was a tiny baby. Now hes a good 8" and we have an emergency. He's quite pale but his fins are all black like they are rotting....? Any ideas/suggestions? Mine was to take him to the LFS and let him deal with it with one of his many hospital tanks for larger (monster) cichlids and what not. Any ideas on what it is? Im pretty dead set that it was min. filtration and small housing that caused it! Any hope......?

could be something associated with fin rot (treat with bacterial meds) or just simply bad water quality. does he ever do water changes?
Sad news guys....he didn't make it....thanks for your help im devestated for my buddy.... Im offering him my oscar so he can go back to a big cichlid buddy....! I told him he had too small a tank but it didn't work.....I want cichla's horribly but i am waiting till i build my dream tank to obtain them.....until then i can just be jealous....But i am terribly upset for my buddies loss and the loss of such a beautiful fish........thanks for your help tho!

yes, there is a great chance the O will outgrow the 55, too. and if he doesn't change what he feeds and how he maintains his tank, the O is going to have other problems, too.
