Remove the ornament from the tank and place it on a table or in a tub. Crayfish need water so wait for him to come out looking for water. Very simple. If he is alive, he will come out in less than 15 minutes. Make sure that he doesn't run away.

Just take it out of water and set it down someplace and be quiet. It'll come out in search of water, but you're around/making noise/etc it's going to stay tucked up inside that thing. If it doesn't come out after 20-30 minutes, it's probably not alive and you won't have to worry about brute force... you'll just be able to pull out the corpse.
