:nilly:Hi there, long story short, moved parrot cichlid into a tank where an oscar ahd just recently deceased, he was bigger than the oscar, i think it was two leporinus fasciatus tore the crap outta him, all his fins etc, i salted the water etc, basically he is healing well, that was a week ago he got attacked, basically, i was wondering if i could take out all the gravel while he was still healing, OR to wait till hes completely healed, due to risk of infection, there is a lot of dirt built up in the gravel
:feedback: ;)

Can't you just thoroughly vacuum your gravel (with a large water change) for now then change it when it's more convienient?

How do you intend to remove the gravel.....syphon it out or empty the tank out and refill it? Just need to bear in mind that a certain amount of your beneficial bacteria will be attached to your substrate so if you remove it you may get a mini ammonia/nitrite spike.

hmm.what i intended on doing is making it a bare bottom tank as the gravel is very unsightly and also gets clogged with mulm constantly so i thought it would be better off as a bare bottom tank

In that case, if it's a fairly light/small gravel (and there's not too much of it) I would try just syphoning it out using a fairly large bore pipe so you don't have to disturb the tank too much.

As long as you have a filter with a good volume of media the majority of the bacteria will be on that so you shouldn't have too much of a problem when you remove the gravel, it's just worth being aware of the possibility of a small pollution spike. Maybe you could remove the gravel in stages during subsequent water changes until it's all eventually out. That's probably how I would go about it.

Good luck with it anyway
