I've had Ursula, my first big fish, for about two weeks now. I really want to make a thread that I can really document her growth and life on.
I wasn't initially planning on getting an oscar. They were something I'd always fawned over but I'd planned on having community tanks. I had an 80 gallon tank and an FX4 filter in my basement waiting for the right project, when someone contacted me asking if I could take in their 2 year old, 14 inch oscar. I said yes and spent the next few days making the perfect home and learning everything I could.... and then never heard back from the person. However, I'd done so much research on oscars and I was so excited and ready, that I decided I really just needed one of my own. So I picked up Ursula!
She won over everyone in my house right away. She's so full of personality, and gets so excited whenever people come in the room. When I first set up her tank I had one anubias plant in there, an extra from another scape, but after I'd had her a few days I thought I'd just see what happened if I planted some more in there. My stems in my 30 gallon were super overgrown anyways. She seems to really enjoy them! She likes to hide and play in them. Of course, she may just destroy them all, but I'm fine with that. I built a nice cave under the log and rocks, and she definitely appreciates that. She darts there if something spooks her, she chills there after big meals, and she sleeps in there too. I'll have to modify it as she grows, I think. She also loves playing in the outflow of the filter and riding up her bubble wall like a tiny elevator. She eats more than I imagined a 3 inch fish ever could... she's a bottomless pit! She does limit herself at meals... she'll eat until she's done and then go into her cave, but 30 minutes later she's begging for another round. Her absolute favourite food is mealworms.
Thanks for reading along so far! Stick around as I figure out big fish keeping :)

Welcome aboard
Great thread on Ursula. What other foods do you feed Ursula?

Can’t wait to see how she grows up! I’ve always wanted one of these fish!

Nice oscar, will be following „her“ growth ??
Yeah, I have no idea if she's male or female obviously. But Ursula just fit her so well I'm going with female. I don't think she's too picky about her pronouns!

Oscars are awesome fish. Like little water puppies.
Very personable.
Two things I would recommend to anyone new to Oscars.
Don’t fall into over feeding, Oscars beg even when you just feed them.
Maintain regular water changes, don’t skimp here and you will have a beautiful long lived pet.

Thanks so much! How much is the right amount to feed a young oscar? It's so hard to tell! Right now I'm on a 30-50% water change per week schedule depending on nitrates.
