Use Canister Filter as pump for Wet/Dry filter

I believe that canister filters are aided by gravity and the use of a siphon. So I think if you try to use one in that fashion it will burn your motor out, or simply not work.

Yeah it won't work. The canister filter has to be below the tank (or in your case, the sump) in order to draw water in via gravity. You'd need a three-tier setup, which would be ridiculous.

I'm in the process of setting up a sump right now, but before I had one I just had my Rena XP2. I got a plastic drawer, cut a drain, filled it up with bio balls, then cute a hole in the top that I could stick my spray bar into. Then I hid the entire thing in my hood. It worked great. You could try and work something out like that, either using the return from your sump to feed a small top mounted wet dry filter, or using the canister to go right from the tank to the wet dry, but I don't see a realistic way to hook all three together.

Great idea. I have a large canopy too, so I know I could fit something up there. Thanks!

The only other advice I'd offer is that you should cut your drain coming out of the side at the height you want the water to be at rather than one coming right out of the bottom. Side drain is both quieter and better at controlling water level.
