We have a gaint oak tree in my parent's back yard and it's due a nice large trim, any chance of me using some nice large chunk's in my tank, if yes how would i go about preparing it?

thanks in advance,

i also hear beech is another good wood is this true and anymore would be nice to know thanks:headbang2

I don't have much experience on this...but I would think the trimmings from your oak tree will have sap in them? Probably not a good idea to use those pieces.

As for preparing wood to go into a tank, i've seen multiple people here recommend boiling it for a couple hours (some say 4 hours). Or if the piece is too large, pour boiling water over it several times...

Also probably a good idea to let the wood soak in a bucket for a week or two after you boil it (to avoid tannis leaching from the wood and staining your water brown/yellow.

hmm see your point, we have some old branches that have been sat behind shed since last summer, if i scrubbed them, boiled them and washed and soaked them should that be ok?
