I am going to be looking at a used 140 gallon tank and stand. From what I hear, all this can be had for $150. I am a little skepical about this tank. He told me that it is long and skinny, every bit of 6 to 8 feet long. It sounds like a 13 inch wide, tall display tank.

Anyways what should I look for besides the obvious? I plan on taking a level for the stand and looking at every square inch of silicone to check for deterioration. Is buying a used large tank very risky?

I will provide an update when I get a chance to look at it. This should be soon. Feel free to share horror stories or successful ones.

Thanks.

You've pretty much have the right idea as to what to look for however I would'nt go in expecting to much because 150.00 is peanuts for a 140 and stand.

Inspect the corners/edges of the glass for chips look carefully at the frame for any signs of brittleness or cracks.I would snag that tank even if it needed resealing :naughty:

check for cracks and possible leaks due to silicon deterioration. and one more thing is to check for correct thickness required for certain dimensions of the tank. you might end up buying a very cheap clean tank but very thin glass which is below the standard of glass or acrylic thickness, however, you might really be getting a great deal without any doubt. :)

That is a good deal... I got my 135 from the LFS for a buck a gallon. Sweet deal, he had an arowana in there that was about 2.5' and decided to upgrade when it jumped out. I asked him if he was getting a 300 he said no a 150...

Custom???

Nope same as this 135 but a few inches taller.

Wierd, needed a bigger tank because former arowana outgrew the tank... but didn't expand, just grew up...

Thanks for the info. I am going to look into all the pointers. I will be looking for tags on the bottom glass because some manufacturers label their aquariums. I will be looking at the stand to determine what condition it is in and check all connecting points and top surface. Thanks again, I am going to try to talk him down to $125!!!!!!!!!!!! We will see how that goes.
