So I'm getting ready to set up my 100 gallon, and have got a line on the filter i want. Its used, but everything is there. I am running fresh, and this was on salt. The price is right, but I'm a little weary of buying a used filter. Any advice/precautions?

If you haven't bought it yet ask to see it hooked up to a bucket of water just to verify that it works and doesn't leak. Maybe look into replacing the seals and any other cheap parts just to be on the safe side too.

if you're tired of buying used filters, I'd just buy a new one.
but yes, never buy an aquarium dry and never buy a pump unrun. if it rattles, I'd avoid it. oft-times that can be fixed with a new impeller, but not always and then your stuck.

if it runs, used is generally as good as new, sometimes used filters need a new impellor but that isnt too expensive on mostmy general rule is... if it works its probably worth paying half of retail or less
