I just picked up a large plastic barrel that was used to import olives to store and condition water for doing water changes on my 160g. It still has a bit of an olivey smell to it, I've given it a good scrub and its soaking now, is there anything I can add to the water to help remove the smell? And is there likely to be anything left over from the olives that would make the water unusable for water changes?

I bought a few from our local farm center. They were used to store pickles.

Just rinse them good with normal dish washing soap. I rinsed mine for about 30 minutes, constantly scrubbing with those cheap sponge mops and then rinsed it until there were no suds left. Been using mine on all my tanks for almost a year now.

I just bought a cheap sub. pump and I connect my PYTHON to it after the water is at correct PH and temperature. I love em, and it beats putting water staight from the tap directly into the tank and guessing when your adding additives.

If the smell bothers you try a baking soda soak. There shouldn't be anything in the olives that harm the fish. It may have a salt residue, but that would be too small to affect anything. The only real issue may be oily residue, but a good cleaning with dish soap should clear that up.

i just did the same thing. i soaked in bleach and water for a few days. dried it out. rinsed it out and soaked it reg water for a few days. then baking soda and water for a few days. mine had hot peppers in it and the smell took forever to get out.
