I just bought a sand filter from someone who had used it for their pool. Can I use it as is without replacing the sand if I run a couple thousand gallons through it before I connect it to my filter system or would I be better off replacing the sand? May be a stupid question but I'm very new to sand filters and using equipment previoulsly used with chlorine.

Very inexpensive to replace the sand. I would go that route just to be safe.

Dont mess around. Sand is too cheap, It will be full of body oils and sunscreen, and other chemicals. You wouldnt drink swimming pool water, why use the dirty sand for your fish. Besides it will be impossible to move the filter filled with we sand so you will have to remove it from the filter anyway.
