so i got a skimmer handed to me yesterday by a guy i know, it goes in the sump, now i have no idea what this skimmmers capabilities are , it stands about 18" tall and has a spout 3/4 the way up to let the water out, and the top portion of it i can take off to dump out scum. its a complete cylinder, and another thing, how should i clean it before it goes into my tank?

HEY, I KNOW THAT I AM A NEWBIE TO THE SITE BUT I THINK I CAN HELP YOU WITH THIS ONE. WITH MY EXPERIENCE, A PROTEIN SKIMMER IS NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING IN A FRESHWATER TANK, IF THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE USING IT FOR, BECAUSE SALTWATER FOAMS WHEN AGITATED AND THAT IS THE SKIMMERS SOLE PURPOSE, TO COLLECT PROTEIN WASTE FROM THE FOAM IN THE COLLECTION CUP. PROTEIN SKIMMERS ARE GREAT FOR BIG SALTWATER FISH BUT DOES NOTHING BUT WASTE ELECTRICITY ON A FRESHWATER SET-UP

I would get a new, cheap toothbrush (has to be new) and bucket of warm water and go to town on scrubbing the scum off, and then put it into a bath of distilled white vinegar and warm water to remove any calcium deposits that might be on it (if it has any). And then rinse thouroughly.

I cant really tell you what it is capable of though just based on the info you gave me. Did it come with a pump? If so, what kind of pump?

the only info i can see reads, on top of the lid says aquarium systems, and the pump name is almost gone cant read it, but the pump does say it cycles 295 GPH

My guess is that it was rated for a 40-50 gallon aqaurium.

I really think skimmer size recommendations are a bit of a joke. I would look at bio load.I had a ASM g2 that pushed around 350 gph on a 90 gallon and it worked well but it came from a fish store that had closed and he was running it on over 600 gallons of volume with just that and a 100 micron sock.

Since it was free I would hook it up and if it keeps your parameters in check than it is rated for your size tank if not then give it to someone else.
