Hello,

I recently brought a Bala Shark back from deaths door thanks to purchasing a 70 litre hospital tank. For seven weeks I have played doctor and last week I delivered the patient back to join the rest of the community in the main tank.

My question is, what do I do with my hospital tank now? Is there something I can use it for that can benefit the main tank? Is there something cool I could try out? or do I simply, clean it up, pack it away until I need it again.

Basically, I don't want to miss an opportunity here if there is one.

I would keep some guppies or something that when a fish becomes ill you can put it back in the hospital and the fish already in there could get eaten or thrown in the larger tank to get eaten.

If you clean it up and all then it wouldn't be cycled for next time then when your fish is already ill it will also have to deal with ammonia and nitrites which won't help at all and make it even worse.

yeah i thought that was the whole point of a hospital/QT tank...was to always have it setup and in good conditions...

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure I want to keep a second tank of fish just at the moment though. Not too worried about cycling, providing I keep the sub tanks media in the main tank, I can then just fill the sub tank from the main tank and the media should be ready to go.
What about plants? Has anyone ever used a hospital tank to try and nurture plants?

empty it and put it away.I cant imagine anyone managing to keep a running tank and not end up stocking it.Keep an extra sponge filter or small filter on your main tank,to use when you need the hospital tank.;)

You only need to keep a filter cycled not the entire hosp. tank.

I empty it and it just sits there. When I need it, I fill it up with water from the big tank.

I clean mine up thoroughly with bleach and let it sit. I also keep a few sponge filter sponges in my canisters if needed to setup the hospital.

clean and put away.

The whole point of a hospital tank is a isolation tank when one fish beats up another

or

mostly when you have a sick fish that needs meds that will hurt the bio filter in the main tank.

That is why you never worry about cycling a hospital tank.

Alot of people use them for quarintine of feeders and such as well.

Get a new batch of feeder treats (not staple) put them in the hospital tank. Treat for fungus and parasites for a day or 2 and then feed away.

But if feeders become a staple food then you need a good cycled feeder tank. ;)

Feeders you say. I haven't fed live foods to my fish before. Is this common practice? Is it better for the fish? I guess just asking here is turning this into a different thread.

I'll start another thread in the right place.

Thanks a lot for the advice
