Using 3/4" gate valve for 1" bulkhead drain

I went to a friend's house and I found an old threaded 3/4" gate valve in his garage and his father let me have it. It's in good condition (dusty though) and I'm wondering if there's any detrimental effects using an adapter and attach it to 1" PVC pipe. Obviously flow will be cut down but will it be drastic? I'm using it for an herbie overflow.

You mean add the gate valve to your primary drain? That may likely hinder your flow. But, that may not be a bad thing as I would imagine a lot of noise if you had it wide open now?

Yea, gate valves are almost totally closed when a Herbie starts running quiet.
