I bought a tank that was used for saltwater, Im wondering what type of cleaning would I need to do for this tank if I want to use it as a freshwater Tank??? Its just a small tank 29 gallon would soap and water be okay? and tank was only setup with saltwater for about two months.

Just clean it out with white vinegar and a scrubbie pad. Then rinse till you dont smell vinegar.
Soap would be much much worse than any residue from the saltwater.
Oxyclean is ok to use,I use it to clean out reptile tanks Im converting to fish use.IMO its overkill for what you are doing. If you use it,rinse ALOT.

rinse and use, the amount of residue from the saltwater is nothing. just clean it up as you would any other tank. People get freaked out over nothing when switching tanks around. The salt will have little to no consequences on the new set up.

I would clean thoroughly, but thats just because thats who I am.

Vinegar works well to clean out all the calcified deposits.

hi , i have just changed my 125g tank over from a reef setup to freshwater , all i did was drain all the salt water out then i filled it with fresh water and about 10 pints of vinegar and left it to soak for 2 days . i then drained it , cleaned it out with a heavy duty scraper and then i filled it and drained it 3 or 4 times and that was it .

I totally agree with dr_suds and BadOleRoss. I have purchased used 55 gal tanks which have had saltwater set ups in them. I would just rinse them out thoroughly with fresh tap water and reuse with out a problem for freshwater set ups. As was said by dr_suds, "Just clean it up as you would any other tank". I might add, the cleaning agents mentioned are effective, but not really necessary when switching from salt to freshwater set ups. Happy cleaning!

I bought a used 150 that was a reef tank for several years. I just rinsed it out, and used dilute vinegar to removed the calcified deposits. In places where I could not remove them (i.e., the overflow) they are still there, but cause no problems.
