So I have a 650 gallon above ground pond. At the moment its under filtered. Ive been working on a diy filter for a while now with no luck. I was wondering for a few hundred dollars if I could just use a 1/4 horse power sand filter. Ive done a little research and heard they filter so well that they need to be back washed all the time. I also heard you could use a mixture of gravel and sand to help with that. Just wondering if anyone here has done this or has any impute, thanks!

I have done this. Is it indoor or out? They tend to compact with algae if outdoor and media is sand only. So gravel or plastic media would be a good choice for outdoors.
I currently have a pool sand filter with plastic bead media for my indoor tank. Works great.
Just be cautious of the amount of water required for a complete backwash. It may drain the pond too much.
