hey, so I have an old 50 gallon tank that I used to hold a bearded dragon in like 8 or so years ago. It says somewhere on the tank that it's a critter holder, and not an aquarium(it's at my parents house and my mom was informing me about this). It's been water tested and it's held water for two days, but before I stick this in my second story apartment I want to make sure it wont spring a leak on me. Anyone have any idea on whether this is water worthy?

I wouldn't do it. The critter tanks are built without a tempered glass bottom, meaning the bottom panel is much weaker than it would be in a watertight aquarium. It's not meant to hold water, so that's why it's cheaper in the stores.

Would it make it safer if I found some styrofoam and padded the bottom? I would really like to use this tank, but also do not want to buy a new one.

I've been using a 35 gal reptile tank for my quarantine tank. Its been filled with water for several months now and I haven't had any leaks. As long as you put it on a sturdy, level stand, you shouldn't have any worries about the bottom panel.

How thick is the glass and what are the dimensions of the tank. If the glass is thick enough, then I would recommend that you reseal the tank just in case. Some reptile tanks are made better than others.

its 36x18, can't remember the height. I may or may not use it now. Kind of a bummer, guess I'm gonna be on the lookout for craigslist snags. Really hoping to use this as an axolotl tank, but I may have to rethink it. I guess it will be a while before i need a 50 gallon tank, so I may water test it for a week or so to see if it works out.
