I am beginning to build my diy stand and my dad decided he would pick up 4x4 cedar posts. Not being all that knowlegeable in wood strength I was wondering if you guys thought that cedar would be stong enough to hold up a 72x30x18 tank? I think it was called red cedar if it matters. And I am using this design http://www.fishandtips.com/step1/st...dth=30&Height=18&StandHeight=28&Step1=checked except that it will be 73x31".

Cedar will do just fine!

Yes, you could build it with cedar 2x4 and still hold the weight just fine, although maybe some people disagree.

Safe > Sorry, though

As long as you can stand the smell of cedar constantly, it'll be fine. I'd get sick of the smell, personally.

you get sick of the smell of cedar ??? lol i love that smell, i have a few scraps of cedar fence boards under the seat of my car as air fresheners

4x4 cedar plank will be more than enough to build your stand. Not as cost efficient as other woods, but much much stronger.

My house is basically cedar. The outside is painted cedar. The living room one entire wall is cedar, and the rest of the walls have cedar wain's coating. The backing on all the kitchen cabinets is cedar..

I love it!!

The smell fades so that it is not overbearing.

EDIT: I've added a picture of the cedar in my house from a sale picture when I recently bought the house. The furniture is not mine. This was one of the photo's used to advertise the house.

Not allowed to have any in this room. One 125G in the bedroom, the rest in my office.
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread. At least it was already answered though.
