I am not too sure any of you guys here use cheap fishes to test water for new tanks after the water cycling process?

In Singapore, alot of people will buy cheap fishes (goldfish, blood parrots or guppies) to test the water after the cycling process in order to see if the water is good for any fishes to live in. So if those 'test' fishes are alive in the tank for a few days later, they will then go and purchase their priced fishes. But if those fishes died in the tank, then it is firefighting once more to get the water right and the whole process continues.

So, do you guys think this is an ethical way to test the tank water? Or plain cruelty?

Keep the comments commin....

If the tank is cycled I see nothing wrong with it. I did the same thing.

Just to make sure that fish can live, I'll put a less expensive one in first.
I did it for my Tig and Black Aro..........better safe than sorry.

thats what i did when i finished the background in my 75 gal
i moved my small female jag in before i moved the 13 inch male in there
i find it easier to lose a 7 dollar fish verses a 40 dollar fish

I know a lot of people who buy cheap fish to cycle the tank all together, they will drop whatever number of fish in the tank and couple will usually die within 24 hours while the ones that make it end up going through all the spikes cycling the tank. My opinion on these people is that they are too stupid to properly setup a fish tank in other, perhaps harder, ways such as fishless cycling and test kits.

Having an already cycled tank, and just testing it before putting expensive fish in - no problem with that.

they may not be too stupid, they may be ignorant or lazy.

Well...there are some extent that some people will buy those feeder fishes to test the tank water. If the fishes made it...then they will dum in their monster priced fishes....those water tester fishes would be transformed to become feeder now...

One stone killing 2 birds....:naughty:

I understand what you're saying.....you're talking about fish test fish *after* the tank is cycled. Vitaliy and myself were talking about people who use them to cycle the tank.

No bro, what I am saying is that there are people actually out there that use these fishes to cycle the tank...and by grace if those fishes are still alive after the cycling period, its then feeding time for the main occupants of that tank...

That is either stupidity, ignorance, or laziness.

If the tank is established and they are using the fish to make certain that everything is in check, that's cool.

Test kits are cheap
