I am currently soaking some driftwood in my tank and it seems my fish like to explore them while they are floating...which makes me want to hang them in mid water...ideally I would like to use fishing lines so they will be transparent...but I worry about my midwater cruisers like SDs and tinfoils...

Any one has experience with it or should I use some other method?

Normally driftwood is weighed down outside the tank until it's water logged. The process can take a while. I've never seen suspended wood in a tank, so I guess my reply may not address your query.

Larger pieces can be weighed down by attaching something heavier (like slate or rock), or by tieing the wood to the substrate (is you are egg crate for the bottom for example.)

I think ecoli is asking if he can suspend his driftwood permanently.
I think you can do it, maybe but something java moss around the lines?

I've seen others tie dw to their crossbraces so that branches hung down like roots. I wouldn't worry about fish hitting it since you're only going to need a piece or 2, you can always tie it high enough that your fish won't swin above the driftwood.

Once the wood with the hole starts to sink, I would like to suspend it 1/3 down the tank. Gives my loaches and cichlids more places to explore, and the shade calms my barbs, silver dollars and bala sharks a lot.

I like the idea of bending or surrounding the line with plants or something the fish can see or at least won't be injured or lose an eye if they ram into it. It is designed to be invisible to fish after all. :)

Oh cool. Totally misread that.

Yes, great idea. And yes, some of the suggestions should work. Not sure of the electroreception on certain aquarium species, but the plants attached to the lines should handle that.

Really nice idea that I must try myself!

The only other thing I have seen that would be more solid/permanent would be to drill a piece of slate to the driftwood and then hang it from the top of the tank pointing downwards between your glass top and trim.
