I am looking into using this product, flourish excell, or should I say over using it, to kill black beard algae in my tank.....

I have heard that it works, and that people have had great results using it to treat this type of algae,...... My question is (and yes, I know this may sound stupid) Do I leave the fish in the tank while treating it or take them out?

Thanks in advance for any advice.............

Fish are safe with flourish excel. But, I never heard off using it to kill of algae, if anything you are helping it I would think. Best bet to get rid of algae is to remove it manually. You also can throw in an alge eating fish that can eat it. But you have to remove lots of algae by hand, dont depend on the fish to clear everything up.

Do you got live plants in the tank too? I dont know about the flourish excel killing the algae alone. Maybe with having live plants in the tank and helping them take all the nutrients, it starves the algae. Maybe thats the trick of it, but then again I dont know. Because I havent heard of it killing the algae all by itself.

it takes quite a bit of an OD on excel to harm fish (way more than you'd use for algae). The metabolic process of algae is interrupted by the aldehydes in it, so not a big deal with fish. 2-3x dose squirted on algae has done the trick for me before, then I switched to american flag fish (jordanella floridae), and I have no algae except some occasional build up on the glass.

i do it often and it works good for me i get a liquid measuring eye dropper that i got for free at walmart and i fill the dropper up with the doseage i want to use. (for my 5.5 its about 2ml) then i just go around to each section of algea and squirt a some on the algea you can see it cover the algea and looks like it sits there. i just do that tell me eye dropper runs out then do it again the next day tell its all gone. works very well. hope that helps

Its pretty well as an algeaecide, but be warned that some plants are sensitive to it aswell and will melt, such as Val and anacharis species.
