hi all. so, as i've previously posted, i recently had 93 gallons of water and fish spill all over the floor. the tank dimensions are 52"l x 22"h x 22"w. my boyfriend bought new panes of glass for the two 52" pieces, one of which was the one that broke after being smoked from the inside with a rock. the new panes were only 5mm thick and so we now know and have been informed that the glass should be thicker than that (even though it was the glass sales guy that said 5mm would be enough. he's since changed his tune).

anyways, so we're shopping around for new glass. one place mentioned/advised AS2 laminated glass. i searched around a bit and some things say it's good, others say no and some have said it's only okay for tanks under 30 gallons.

what i'm wondering is for a tank this size would it be better to go with the 6.38mm thick laminated glass or to go with just a thicker regular type glass (ie 10mm thick) with a 3.8 safety factor? any advice/recommendations/experiences are welcome. i want to get the best idea i can before purchasing anything. another 93 gallons on the floor is not wanted...

Personally I would go with regular 10mm plate glass. Starphire if cost is not an option. It is what most commercially made glass tanks use, so why ruin a good thing? Go with the tried and true method.

thanks for the advice. i am leaning towards going with regular 10mm thick glass just because, as you say, that's what seems to be generally done. plus with the laminate the 6.38mm just seems so thin after having the glass break once.

is there really no one else out there with thoughts on this?? i just cannot find any helpful info on the web about laminate glass. a lot of sites have said that with laminate what you gain in safety you lose in strength, which worries me (but at the same time doesn't seem to make a lot of sense...?)
