is their any issues with using the red lava rock from home depot as media.i added some into my rays tanks and they started to act up?? strange becasue i boiled and let it soak for 24 hours before adding.it could have altered the ph maybe this is what happened?

I know lava rock isn't a good idea, found out from someone here on the forums that it isn't porous as some think ... not sure hope someone else can go into more detail, because I don't remember.

We were discussing reactors not long ago.... What happened?

Makes no sense to me to be putting questionable rock in with expensive fancy rays.

I always question this also. The LFS sells lava rock and the landscaping places sell lava rock also at a much lower price.

Was always wondering are they all the same?

I use lava rock in my koi tank... It's used in the trickle tower to create bio media. It's very porous.

It hasn't changed my ph at all.

But, I would never put it in with rays.. I would be afraid they would get scratched up by it.

i did build a reactor its a sump style with a double chamber of fluidizing media.their was extra space left in so i seen a 40lbs bag of lava rock for $8 at home depot.anyways it will increase the ph and my ph is swinging like crazy again from the tap water.it explains why my rays are acting up.

my taps ph is 7 and my tanks well over 8.2.i drip 250 gpd this is causing the stress.ro is way to expensive my water bill is $250 a month already ro will increase the water usage 3 time higher ! my old lady will cutt me off permanatly ,shes already complaining that the freaking rays cost this much.

tap water is 6.8 one day and the next morning tap water will be 7.5???? than if i fill a cup up with tap water let it sit for a day the ph will be over 8??? naturally buffers itself yes but does this effect my rays in the tank.1200 gallons of water the tanks at 8 or higher and i drip 250 gallons a day of of low ph that buffers it self up in 24 hours.

To my knowledge the reason the water is reading a lower ph has to do with the gases in it mainly co2 and the ph isn't changing so much as you are getting a false low reading because of the co2 (someone correct me if im wrong here)

This should not effect the rays as the kh/gh is more important than the ph reading. So basicly you need to test your kh/gh I think :)
