Using material on the input of a powerhead

Would there be anything wrong with putting the end of a sock, or some other kind of material on the end of a powerhead for added filteration? Does it have to be a sponge?

I doubt it would hurt. But sponge filters are cheap. I bought two for 8.00. not to mention it looks better. JMO

it looks crappy, you expose your tank to athletes foot, you expose your tank to cleaners in the washing machine.

i personally dont think anything bad would happen, other then it might get clogged alot faster then sponges
