How many of you use media other than what was intended to be used in your HOB power filters? What do you use? Like for example, do any of you put scrubbies in your filter?
i bought one of those mesh media baggies and tossed out the bio max and activated carbon for my AC 20. i replaced it with the mesh media bag, full of used Eheim Subtrat pro from my other filter on my 120.
scrubbies, unrolled scrubbies, filter floss, bamboo, chunks of rock (for buffering)... prettymuch anything ive ever had in a sump has also ended up in an overflow at somepoint
If you want to maximize the space in the HOB, fill it with ceramic media, not wet/dry media. Scrubbies and bioballs have hardly any surface area in comparison.
I use substate or substrate pro in my aqua clear110's works out well. My top fin 60 on my 90 i only use really because I can stuff the cartridges with matrix carbon and easily remove it if needed. I skip the carbon in all the aqua clears of course.
in my parents tank i take care of, i suffed scrubbies in after the floss cartridge(modded these so i can put polyfiber and felt as bulk mech). their tank ran fine before but i figured why not fill the empty space with something. eventually i plan on putting some scouring pads before the scrubbies. this way every w/c i just clean one mech cartridge and don't have to disturb the bio. it may not be much but the fish seem happy
