I have got 5 4" RBP in a 4ft tank, started with 3 and successfully added 2 more. they are characteristically skittish but with subdued lighting and plenty of cover they are settling down. I have placed a mirror against one of the ends of the tank to give the p's the elusion that the tank is bigger and they are in a larger shoal. they have begun to congregate in this corner and I will keep observing to see if it is due to the mirror. if the p's see their reflection and believe they are part of a larger shoal than this should make them feel more secure and therefore less skittish.
I got this idea from a zoo in jersey (uk) that kept flamingos. their flock was limited in size due to the enclosure and the zoo had no luck with breeding as the birds never fully relaxed. they added mirrors to the back wall and the end of the enclosure and the birds where breeding by the end of the year.
has anyone ever used a mirror with p's or other shoaling fish with any success before?
