I know it's fish food and not for humans but I can image it can go bad too.

It's Called "New life Spectrum all purpose formula"

I got it when my friend gave me his tank/fish about 4 years ago. It was opened and there is a little gone from it. It has very tiny pellets(almost like it's for bettas).

When I open it...it has a strong fish food smell, which makes me think it could still be good.

What do ya'll think? Still ok to use?

I use the exact same stuff, and its roughly 2.5 years old. no issues.

After 4 yrs, and being opened, and exposed even somewhat to 02, light, moisture, nutrient loss would be significant enough that personally I would toss it.

does that include the NLS containers with the screw on lids? which im guessing is what he has?

I would water it down with some fresh stuff, but I'm a cheap azz.

In all probability the vitamins have oxidized, and the fats have gone rancid, that's why you get a strong smell, I would toss it

Most commercial fish foods have an expiration date of 1-3 years, depending on the product, and preservatives used. That doesn't mean that all of the nutrients will have oxidized, or that the fat content will have gone rancid. Light, 02, moisture, and time are all enemies of any food product, so factor that into the equation and then make your own call. Screw lids don't ensure freshness or nutrient levels. BTW - I used to be a wholesale distributor for NLS, and I am very familiar with their products, including shelf life.
