hello, stupid question im sure.

i own alot of tanks but have been using rubbermaids as extra grow out tanks for my.......not so special fish/and quarintine.
so im growing out a few fish in rubbermaids and have them set up with a bubble stone and weakly waterchanges.

i just noticed some of my cons and green terror were trying to mate!

is it bad to keep them in the rubbermaids for a while?? i was afraid it was bad for there vision etc niot being able to see anything.

This is just speculation (as I have no experience with rubbermaids) but one could argue that the fish will be less stressed in a rubbermaid (as they don't spook when people walk by and/or less direct lighting/etc).

But if you have no decor or substrate in them I would think they wouldn't be so happy.

Just a thought..

OOOOO now why didnt i think of that?! that is a great and cheap alternative! im going to do this for my jack dempsey babies. there are so many of them i was worried about putting them in my two 20 gallons. no worries now! thanks for the idea!

rubbermaids are excellant. but i think you need more filtration than just an air stone. atleast a large sponge filter on the end of the air hose rather than a stone. something for BB to grow on.

what im planning to do for the fish room.

have the pairs in tanks and grow out there fry in rubbermaids/box's

yep, my big pairs are all in show tanks (my fish room has turned into a fish house with far to many tanks that ARENT filled.)

using the rubbermaids for quarentine and grow outs.

also i have hang on back filters on most of them, and a lil gravel/slates.

PS! what about heaters i have mine on the eggcrate bottem is this going to melt? i was so scared of melting the plastic.

thanks everyone!

Hi. I've used rubbermaids for qt for years with no problems.. I use the heater feet and a submersible heater and have not had a problem even when raising the temps very high to treat for ich etc.. I just make sure the heater part that gets hot does not touch the plastic.. I also use the large sponge filters. I find the fish are fine in there... mine are clear plastic so you can see them but not so clear as glass would be and that they spook.. I've even had blue rams spawn in there.. I usually add a tiny bit of gravel or pool filter sand, a piece of driftwood or a rock and some floating plants. For light I use one of those clip ons to a separate bowl thing next to the rubbermaid container... or sometimes just the room light. If you place the rubbermaid on top of another container... I use a cooler to add height... then you can use you python to do water changes.. HTH Sue:D
