I am about to clean out my Eheim Pro II 2028 filter, and i was going to rinse the ehfi substrat pro and replace 1/3 of it as the manual suggests.

I was wondering if it would be ok to replace the 1/3 of ehfi substrat with pot scrubbies instead. Or if i could replace all of the ehfi substrat with pot scrubbies would that be ok?

how old is the substrat pro? Pot scrubbies don't have anywhere near the surface area that substrat pro does, so I don't think I'd put scrubbies in instead of it. . .

From what I've seen, substrat pro doesn't really need replaced the way they say it does- they simply want you to buy more. If it's clogged & dirty, put 1/3 of it in some boiling water. Boil it for a couple minutes, and that should clean it up. If that's not enough, bleach it afterwards. Then soak it in some dechlorinator, and pop it back in the canister. It will work MUCH better than scrubbies.

The substrat pro is only a few months old. I could have swore that i read that the scrubbies had more surface area. Should i just leave well enough alone then?

I have to crack the filter open to take the carbon out of it this weekend, so i figured i would do early maintainence.

id keep substrate pro in a canister over scrubbies.... and i never replace my bio media... i flat out dont touch it..

if it gets real nasty (does happen) ill drain some tank water to a clean bucket and keep the media in the baskets and give it a few shakes dips etc... just to remove most of the detritus after that right back in the filter and back on the tank...
