Bichir Alley
I just set up my 55g 3B (Bare Bottom Bichir) tank (literally finished filling it up less than an hour ago). I already have two other established tanks, and I stole a filter cartridge from one of them (a 29g with a Whisper 30-60) and put in my new tanks filter (Aqueon 55 -- not an exact fit, but it works). My question is: What should I be doing to keep the BB in the seeded media thriving? I have added 5-6 shrimp pellets in to give off at least a little ammonia after they sit there...

Does anyone have any suggestions? How long should it take before I can add my intended fish (three 4" Polypterus senegalus)? I will be keeping an eye on my levels for sure.

I've always started cycling tanks from scratch, so I am a little out of my element...

I have never added the shrimp pellets no need to and the water is fine its the Benificial bacteria on the filter pad you need and if you took it of a cycled tank your fine I would not worry!

I should mention that I am only using 1 seeded cartridge out of 2. What I did was stick the seeded media behind one of the new cartridges, so the water will have to pass through the seeded media first.

Sounds fine, just monitor your water levels over the next couple of days.

I have to do the same thing with a small 5 gallon tank I am setting up at work. Except...I will be carrying an established bio wheel inside a carrier filled with tank water from my Cichlid tank at home. Just going to float the sucker in there for a couple of days and monitor the levels before I add...one fish.

Alright... I think I'm going to do it...

I'll have pictures tomorrow.

edit:I did read that Dr. Joe, thank you. :)
