So recently in my county there has been a problem with the tap water, there were levels of E. coli in it. My question is it it safe to use in my tank. I was about to do a water change when I remembered it.

E coli is a normal part of the natural environment.
When I was a microbiologist at a water facility, I would occasionally test my tank water for Total coliforms and Ecoli, with expired media just for grins to use it up.
My results were always off the charts with both indicator bacteria, and the tap water was always negative.
By the way, I probably wouldn't drink your tap water until there is an all clear given.

Ok thanks. So it is fine for my tank?
On the drinking part, I know, we're suppose to boil it first.
