I was wondering if I bought used stock tanks and clean it up would it be alright to use as a pond filter or just to hold water for fish? How long do these stock tanks hold their strength? I found a guy that is selling his but had it four 8 years, 5 years of colecting dust and the first three years that he had it was used for steers/ or bulls..

Depends on the stock tank. I've seen some flimsier ones and there are the thick gray ones that are drilled. The thick gray ones last forever. Great product.

I've been using this one for over twelve years and it is good as new!

UV is the main thing that will deteriorate the plastic, so if it has been under cover for the last five years it should be in good shape. As long as the surface isn't cracked or chalky I would say it's fine.

The one I have found is rubbermade and I read up that the gray ones are made so it can be in the sun and wont get damage is that not true? or maybe the newer ones?

It's the sump for my 219 and 135 freshwater tanks. Check out this thread: :grinno:

Also, the Rubbermaid tanks are quite durable and UV resistant, the cheaper poly tanks not so much.

So earlier you said as long as its not chalky? What do you mean by that? as if the material is falling apart?

BTW
That is an amazing setup you have there!! Very beautiful tank!
