Hi all, I usually mix cold water from the tap with boiling water from the kettle to get the water to the correct temperature during a water change, but this method takes quite a long time. I'm sure I heard somewhere once that you can't use hot tap water because of copper in the water or something like that. Is this true?

If I was gonna do a 50% WC, imagine how much boiling water it would take to heat 50 Gallons of water.

Now imagine boiling enough water to heat like 120 Gallons if I was gonna do a 50% on a, say, 240 Gallon tank.

I've been doing it for 7 months and no problem yet. Yes, it does take more time to the trash bin with hot then mix with cold. I have heard the same regarding copper but I don't think it will be a problem unless your hot water color come out rusty yellow or orange then I wouldn't use.

The hot water from the tap here is crystal clear, I will try using it this week for my water change and see how it goes.

I used it all the time, because I have 300 gallon.if I use my 2x 200w heater it would take a week to the temperture that i want

As far as im awaire one of the reason for not using hot water from a Stored Hot Water System is that because the water is not hot enough to kill off the bugs that can live in the hot water tank. I have a combination boiler which does not store hot water, it produces hot water as and when its needed so I have no worries about using hot water for my water changes.

During water changes I change out almost 400 gallons of water, without hot tap water I would die. I have used tap water for over 4 years now without issue. I use tap water conditioner which removes Chlorine/Chloramine and detoxifies heavy metals. You can get it at any aquarium store or online (it's cheaper).

look at this was would you drink the hot water from the tap i woundnt

the problems with hot water from the tap is it goes throw the boiler which can be harmful to the fish cooper poision

what the big deal the drop in temp is a good thing in a large tank

when i do my water changes the temp drops from 86 down to 78 with not problems at all

in some ways the temp drop is a good thing as it simulates rain fall and can make the fish breed

I've read the copper issue was only in real old houses with old pipes. Our house is over 30 years old and I've always mixed hot/cold water from tap for over 10 years of keeping aquariums. I never had any issues on my 125 gallon tank, which houses discus, angels, plecos. I do use aged, heated water for my zebra plecos and shrimp tanks. It's just I'm careful with my zebra plecos, especially at over $100 per fish.
