Using Yarn

can i use yarn in my guppy tank for the babies to hide in

I presume by yarn, you mean what we call knitting wool this side of the pond. You can use it, some breeders make spawning mops for tetras using Yarn. Bunches of it attached to pieces of cork for bouyancy would make great hiding places for fry.

i've heard of fishing line being used, not yarn though. could work in the same way i suppose

seems like it would work for a while, before the yarn really starts to get nasty anyway.
