Hopefully I didn't fool anyone with thinking I got reptiles now with the title, but I need your help reptile enthusiasts. I'm breeding mealworms/supers....read my sig if your interested. Here's the situation. They need around 80F for good production process. Right now it's about 70 if not 68F, maybe 72 at the tops in the furnished basement. We don't turn the heat on that high.

So which would work better. Obviously cost is an issue, I could buy a few at a time, but all in all I'm not spending hundreds of dollars heating up mealworms/supers just for a few months while it's cold out. Here's the setup which will explain alot.

I'm thinking heater cables that are a few feet long which can go under both bins and then plug in the extension cord. Sure I'll have 5 sets of heater cables but beats 12 UTH per bin, BUT will the cable heat through the plastic? Will the UTH heat the plastic? These are bus table tubs, the kind at any restaraunt, so their a little thicker than just some sterilite tubs, but not much thicker.

I'm breeding these to sell so production upkeep is a must. I can't breed tons during the warmer months then slow to a crawl for 4 months or so. You might think I'm crazy, but even crazy people need help sometimes. :D

You should use some flex watt heat tape, pretty much an UTH but you cut it to length. You could use a single one to cover each rack

Hmmmmmmm, after searching this for quite a bit now I think that will do much better. I can tape it down to the plastic shelf and hook them all up together or hook 2 foot long sections up together and run to different rheostats.

So the question is now which size of flexx watt tape to purchase? There's 3,4, and 11 inch widths. I'm thinking with the size of the tubs 11 inch will be a must. Also each tub would have a foot long section under it, that's the plan so far. Anyone else?

agreed with the above suggestion

Well I bought 4 feet of the 11 inch version and the clip set to hook it up. Going to see how it works out, didn't want to buy 20 feet or something and it just doesn't work out for me. Thanks guys. Anyone know of a cheaper thermostat or even rheostat? It doesn't have to be exact temps here so a cheaper model would suffice.
