UV and Black Beard Algae

Where I live in Colorado, our water straight from the has a high phosphate count present. I picked up a 24W UV yesterday on a trade and stuck it on my tank. My question is... Are UV's effective on BBA or am I just running the UV for kicks? (Not counting the disease preventative aspect)

In my experience it will only kill algae in the water column. Once it's attached its not going anywhere.
