Do any of you guys use it? How important is it?

I used to use them but stopped. Now I only use them temporarly when I suspect there are parasites/protozoans/bacterias build up in my tank.

Let's just say it's more of a supplement.

I use them in a couple of my tanks...

If used properly they kill parasites...

They do make the water more crisp & clear...

They do help keep algae at bay...

Thanks guys. I think I might pick one up.

I got a 125gallon. What kind should I get? How many W do I need?

Once you determine the flow rate you want you can size the UV. You also need to decide (I'm simplifying.) if you want to kill algae and bacteria, or algae, bacteria, and parasites. The former requires less power; the latter requires more power.

Then go to the specifications of the UV you're considering, and match it up to your flow rate and to which of the two power levels you require.

Alternatively, you can get a less powerful UV and set it up on a bypass at a lower flow rate. This is not ideal, but it is less expensive.

Thanks! I might as well kill as much crap as possible:headbang2

For all of the benefits a UV has to offer... I highly suggest...

1W of UV strength per 10 gal of water in your system...

at an actual flow rate of 10 gph per 1W of UV strength...

In other words... for a 125 gal tank... a 12.5W (or slightly larger) UV lamp with 125 gph (or slightly less) flowing through it would be wonderful...
