I have a FH who is so nasty. He destroys his tank with food waste. Currently have a oretty nasty Brown Algae bloom going on. Thinking of adding a UV filter to combat. Any suggestions for or against?

Brown algae can be a bit more challenging to deal with. Yes a UV sterilizer will help, but you'll need to be continually scraping the brown algae off whatever it's clinging to, in order to get it into the water column, where it can then be killed by the UV sterilizer. If you keep doing this you may eventually get rid of it. But if it's stuck on rocks, glass etc. the UV sterilizer won't really help at all.

A pleco will help, if your FH will tolerate it (my Kamfa won't) -- just make sure it's not small enough for your FH to eat; the barbs of the pleco will get stuck in your fish's stomach and he'll die.

But my question is how can a fish destroy his tank with food waste? That's on us, not the fish :) Overfeeding, besides causing health issues for your FH, will often lead to brown algae outbreaks.

What I meant by destroying his tank is that about 25% of what goes in his mouth comes out his gills as he eats.

Well that certainly makes more sense :) plz excuse my mis-interpretation. I had a similar problem if I gave my FH denser pellets; they're just too messy. Since switching over to Ocean Nutrition (Formula 1 and Formula 2), which are semi-moist, no such issues.

I will give that a try. I’m feeding the Hikari Gold and it’s an absolute mess. Thanks

That's kind of strange he's doing it that much through the gills with Hikari Gold, which I sometimes also use; I find Hikari to be medium density, not so compact as say NLS or Azoo UltraFresh. You might try a smaller pellet or only giving him a few at a time (waiting for him to consume 2 or 3 pellets first before giving him more; if he gets a bigger mouthful, more likely to come out the gills).

By the way, Ocean Nutrition does have a Cichlid Formula, but I actually prefer Formula 1 and Formula 2, which are marketed as being for saltwater fish (perfectly fine for freshwater fish according to ON, which I contacted by email). They're more expensive but the ingredient list is even better, nearly comparable to NLS or Northfin imho (and with no mess).
