UV lamp cleaning question

I accidentally touched the lamp (bulb) in my UV sterilizer. I was told not to do that because the oils in fingertips can create a hot spot and cause the bulb to crack. Anyone have any idea on how I can clean the bulb safely and go back to using it? It's a new bulb and I would hate to have to buy a new one. Thanks.
