Quarantine Tank
Do you use UV with your rays?

Think its helpful? A waste? :nilly:

What are the reasons you use it?

i have a 40 watt emperor aquatics UV sterilizer on my 180 with my rays and the water is much cleaner. it cuts down on the pathogens that may be lurking around the tank lessening the chance of any possible problems

I understand the cleaner water reasoning but in terms of introducing pathogens, do you regularly add new stock?

Not directly aimed at you omo, but does anyone think that this reasoning could be easily solved through proper QT?

I use it on one of my tanks but find no difference in water quality (clarity) due to the amount of waterchanges on all the tanks. As for anything else not sure if it would help or not, I'm thinking a good quarantine routine would solve those problems. I'm also looking at an ozinizer instead of uv.

I was thinking this as well...

Care to elaborate on this? Reasoning?

I haven't got all my ducks in a row yet but from what I understand the water becomes clearer and more oxygen enriched. It also aids in the breakdown of ammonia and nitrite. And it is also more efficient at killing bacteria. Downside is if you don't know what your doing you could kill all your fish!
I've picked up all the euipment except for the ozone reactor so when I get that I'll plumb in and test and report the findings.
I think chompers built one and reported great success with his but I think I'll pay the money and get the good stuff.

I use UV and will always use it, I am also building a OZONE system for my place now and will have it up and running very soon. When you combine UV and OZONE you get very good results. All major public aquariums use OZONE these days. But it can also be very harmfull to your fish is not done properly so make sure get a good system with automated monitor. I will make thread once I get started.
