I know this isn't ideal but I'm really leaning towards running my new UV through the sump. I don't want to add any more intakes/returns to the main tank and I figure if I keep those in the upper couple inches of the sump if I have a leak or something nothing too bad can go wrong. The setup 640 gallons with about 4000 gph through the sump. What do you think?

I can't see why this would be an issue. You're still "treating" the same water

If it will fit in the sump it'll be the same if you had it outside the sump. It'll be fine. How big is your sump? Dimensions?

I just chose to try the 36 watt Jebao to start. I'm going to run it off an empty FX 5. I figure I'll put the intake on the "clean" water end of the sump and then return it back through the socks. The actual UV will be mounted on the back of the stand. The sump is a 100 gallon Rubbermaid trough.

That was my thought. When I was looking around at UVs I spoke with the folks at Aqua and they said even if you're turning over a tank many times an hour the only way to assure complete coverage is to have the UV on a closed loop or the main return line from the sump. I see their point but in many setups that would be a challenge to get done.
