I have decided im going to setup a larger tank than one I have and I intend to add same gravel as other tank, and adding some filter media to the new filter as well as using a sponge filter attached to filter water intake, will this aid in cycling going to be seting up 30 gal current is 20 gal but I am going to be running a uv sterilizer with the filter(eheim eco) but I will be using the hydra aquatics sponge filter wich is attached to the intake my question is will this hinder sterilizer's ability to help destroy things such as ick, alagea ect? only fish have in th 20 gal right now is a silver hatchetfish im powerfeeding to help him reach 2"

The best condition for the UV filter is to get clear water sent through it for sterilization. Clear (not turbid), so pre-filtering to keep out food particles, loose sand, etc. is certainly recommended. If water going to the UV is cloudy it limits it's ability to sterilize.

Since sponge filters will normally not stop the transmission of algae cells, ick etc, you should be fine. To trap these efficiently, you'll need something with much smaller pores than you'll normally find in a sponge. It's possible that of course that over time (if the sponge gets clogged), it will trap some of these and slow down the water flow to the UV, so you don't want the sponge to get in that condition.

This assumes that you have the proper size and flow rate for your UV, but otherwise you should be fine.
